Greetings! I’ve got another “Rapid Reset video for you today, and it’s all about “Conscious Venting” as a pathway back to inner peace.
“Conscious Venting” is simply sharing an emotionally jolting incident with a trusted friend, colleague or group with the explicit intention of letting the charge go.
When you talk with a friend about the lady who cut in line at the grocery store, express frustration about canceling travel plans or share a personal struggle, you may be “consciously venting” without even knowing it.
If you’re sharing just to fuel your anger, frustration or upset, it’s not “conscious venting” and those icky emotions will stick to you like velcro and grow!
If you’re sharing as a mechanism to release the emotional intensity, then YAY, this is an excellent strategy to bring yourself back to your center. Bravo! (((Applause!!!)))
Of course, humans naturally share feelings, especially when they are intense. Well, most of us do. Others keep things bottled up, and that’s a whole other issue.
But, without the element of consciousness, it’s a crap shoot. Sometimes we’ll get a release and sometimes it only feeds the drama.
Intention is everything!
A few weeks ago, I did some “conscious venting” on Facebook about our neighbors starting a pool remodel — and A LOT of noisy jackhammering (second round of jackhammers during our stay-at-home mandate). Argggh!!! I have an amazing community on Facebook, so many were empathetic, which made me feel better. But, some were enraged even more than I was, and it amplified my upset, instead of diffusing it. Yikes!
The one thing I’m clear about is dwelling in negative emotion doesn’t feel good, interferes with productivity and focus, and makes me more irritable with loved ones. How about you?
When “talking about the thing” keeps upsetting you… then I don’t recommend “conscious venting” about “the thing” as a path back to peace.
This is why venting about anything political typically only makes it worse. While you’ll likely find others empathizing with your point of view, you’ll also likely find people reacting to your point of view — causing you to double down on your upset –(like I did about the construction) and thus creating a vicious cycle that only amplifies the icky emotions.
I’m all for people speaking up politically, regardless of one’s views being the same as mine or not. The First Amendment is key to our republic. But, unless you’re willing to find a little give and take in your exchanges, don’t be surprised when “conscious venting” around politics does not work.
The next time, something throws you off center, try “conscious venting” with a trusted friend, family member or coach. You’ll know you’ve done “conscious venting” effectively, when you only need to express it just once or twice.
Coming back to and keeping your center is the name of the game.
