Inner Peace Practice – End of Year Completion

December 30th, 2009

Picture1As 2009 draws to a close, it is a good time to turn inward and reflect on the past year, accomplishments, major events, traveling adventures, family time, magic moments. Several years ago, I began a process with my clients called “End of Year Completion.” It’s a wonderful way to ‘move out the old’ and bring in the new. I discovered this process with my first coach, and found it to be of enormous value to me personally, as well as for my clients. It’s a process I STILL do each year. Take the time to write down your own answers. It’s also become my traditional way to close out the year.

1. What are your disappointments, failures, and breakdowns? Let’s acknowledge what these items are….this is an opportunity to let them go, carry them forward, or make a new promise.

2. Make a second list titled: Successes, Wins and Accomplishments. This is a chance to celebrate and own who you have become this year, and your achievements. Where did you step into your power and greatness? Please don’t skimp on these. The little stuff counts. NO modesty allowed. Let’s validate all your accomplishments. Look through your organizer to remind you.

3. What have you learned about yourself and your life? What insights have you gained? True insights have the transformational capability of shifting us into a new, more alive place! As we are blessed with insights it is important to nurture and deepen these new understandings.

4. What are you grateful for? This list might include some of the above and anything else you truly appreciate about yourself or any other area of your life. There is a basic principle. Whatever you appreciate and give thanks for will increase in your life.

5. How will you celebrate and honor your 2009 accomplishments? What would be a fun, special thing to do for yourself?

Inner Peace: 10 ½ Keys to Living Fully Fulfilled – Key #8 – Surround Yourself with Beauty

December 16th, 2009

key2This is the simplest and easiest key to fulfillment AND it clearly contributes to joy and happiness. Surrounding yourself with beauty means creating an environment that is appealing, supportive, nurturing, pleasant and delightful to YOU. Your environment is one of the most powerful influences on your energy, your mood, your creativity – and your fulfillment.

Your home and work environments are two obvious places to start. Pictures of friends & family, fresh flowers, plants, art and meaningful knick-knacks are simple ways to personalize and brighten your environment. Secondly, spend time in nature and enjoy life’s natural beauty - the ocean, mountains or even a local lake or park will stimulate your senses and alleviate your stresses. PEOPLE make up the third component in your “beautiful” environment. I’m not talking about physical beauty; I’m talking about supportive, nurturing, energizing relationships that contribute to your overall fulfillment.

Get yourself some fresh flowers for your desk, visit nature at least once a week, and spend time with the people who love you most – and notice the impact of “beauty” on your life.

Inner Peace with Alanis Morissette

December 14th, 2009

As part of a coaching assignment, my coach Arjuna Ardagh invited me to identify songs that elicited a wide array of feelings and emotions. He suggested Alanis Morissette’s Thank You for the song to elicit gratitude.

Upon my first listen, I didn’t quite get why this song was such a “good match” for gratitude. Afterall, Alanis Morissette doesn’t come close to the soothing nature of Cecilia’s Amazing Grace. But, then I started listening more closely to the lyrics. I’ve been hooked on this song ever since.

Our deepest inner peace comes when we can embrace every aspect of our humanity. We take it a step deeper when we find gratitude for even the less obvious gifts of terror, disillusionment, frailty and consequence.

Are you embracing the gifts of every aspect of your humanity?

I invite you to download the song, “Thank You” by Alanis Morissette from iTunes, and listen deeply to the words. Not just once, but again and again. You may soon be experiencing a more profound sense of inner peace as you acknowledge the gifts named in this song.
